The Battle of Passchendaele

The Battle of Passchendaele or often called the Third Battle of Ypres was a significant battle in the first world war.  This four month long, bloody skirmish began on July 31, 1914 and ended on November 11, 1914.  The battle took place in Passendale, Belgium.  Passchendale was known for its muddy, rough terrain.  It was one of the worst battles fought in WWI.  The battle mainly took place im wet, swampy, marshland even though Passchendale didn't get much rain during this time of the year.  The Germans built pillbox, or dug in areas into the dirt, making them close to impossible to hit.  On November 6, 1917 the Canadian Corps took Passechendale.

My Opinion

My opinion on the battles of World War One is that it was uncalled for. The war started over such a simple concept that it doesn’t even really matter. There were over 100 battles in the first world war and none of them needed to be fought. If every country in the world wouldn’t have been allied to either Germany, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Russia or Britain then the rest of the country wouldn’t have gotten involved.

The First World War affected the World in many ways. First off it caused many young men to leave their homes and fight for a battle that some didn’t even want. It also caused many countries to change the form of government they were using. Germany was forced to pay a lot of war debt which ultimately caused World War Two. As Europe continued to fall further into debt from war costs, inflation plagued the world. Then the world’s optimism was abandoned and thoughts of pessimism were thought after the world saw the aftermath of the war.

A political effect was hoe the German’s were treated. How they were forced to sign the treaty of Versailles of 1919. This treaty stated that Germany was responsible for the war the debt which was to be paid back to the other countries in compensation for their war debts. The Germans were very much humiliated from this. In addition, the size of Germany’s state was reduced while Italy and France were made larger. This upset the Germans. The German military refused to stop fighting, even though it was ordered that Germany’s military was to be drastically reduced. So the German soldiers joined a group called the Freikorps. This was a small military.

I think that Germany overreacted over the whole subject. If they would have just taken their punishment and gave up they wouldn’t have caused millions of more casualties and a second World War. The first World War was supposed top be the one to end all wars. Obviously the Germans didn’t understand the concept.

After the war technology increased and things became more expensive. Economies all over the world were boosted. The production of cars, planes, radios, and some chemicals skyrocketed. Even though the economies boosted, the landscape that was ruined never recovered back to its natural state before the war.

Psychologically the world trusted their leaders less after the war. Especially those who saw the destruction first hand. The world was now more in fear of a second world war. They were also afraid of a draft. Germany entered the war being one of the world’s strongest powers. Once the war ended and Germany lost. They couldn’t accept the fact they had lost. This caused a profound shock and made Germans upset.

My closing opinion is that the United States should have stayed out of the conflict. It would have saved a lot of American lives. I think our day and age is experiencing some of the same issues that went on back then. The war in Iraq was a war we should have stayed out of too. We have a war currently going on overseas.

Every day more troops are deployed and our country goes further into debt. We are also suffering from a weak economy and the anxiety from the separation of our loved ones that are fighting for our country.
